Countdown to Professional
It was 1998 when I
discovered my true calling in life. As a
teacher in a preschool infant classroom I was able to apply my love for
children, creativity, interpersonal and multitasking skills on a daily
basis.
But there was always something that stuck in the back of my mind, and it had a profound effect on my confidence. When I would tell people that I was an infant teacher, the response was often, "Oh, okay," spoken in a tone that really implied, "That's IT?" I did not gain much respect because of the stereotypical point of view: "Day Care Worker" or better yet, "Babysitter."
In 1999 I began
taking classes, working towards a degree in Early Childhood Education. Through the years, I never really knew what I
really wanted to be when I "grew up."
Classes were just a necessity and my focus was more on getting it over
with.
After a 5 year break
from evening classes, an opportunity arose for me to complete the remaining 7
classes, and I will be graduating in May, 2012 with a 2 year degree after 13
years. Upon
reviewing options for a transfer program, I finally figured it out. I now know what I want to do, who I want to
be, the direction that I would like to go and plans for making it happen are
already underway.
After a prolonged period
of career stagnation, this new sense of forward motion on a clearly defined
path feels like a space shuttle with its rocket boosters counting down to
lift-off.
As a result of this renewed interest in actual Early Childhood Education, I have a whole new perspective on children and education in general. Learning how their
little brains learn and
process information, and knowing what to do to improve
development in different areas is absolutely fascinating, challenging,
motivating and 100% inspiring. The ultimate goal is to set out on a course to redefine "Child Care Worker" and help people realize that we, as teachers, are educated "Early Childhood Teaching Professionals."
It’s going to be an amazing journey, and I would love for YOU to come along for the ride!
